Breeding

The road from an experimental plant to a consumer product is long and requires years of intensive breeding effort. The breeding process at Florensis focuses on providing the entire supply chain with added value: plants of excellent quality for the growers who pass this quality on to retailers who sell the final products to satisfied customers.

Our Quedlinburg location

The oldest breeding location used by Florensis is located in Quedlinburg, Germany. Here, in foil greenhouses with isolation chambers, in modern greenhouses, and on large container fields for hybridising and selection, we produce standard and elite line plant material as well as seeds.

Florensis’ most important genetic material developed in Quedlinburg comprises: Petunia Viva® and Vivini™, Osteospermum Astra®, Verbena Vegas® and Venturi®, Diascia Juliet™, Nemesia Nuvo®, Gaura Gaudi™, Salvia Sensation®, Saxifraga Marto and Lavandula Essence.

The Toscana breeding programme

Since moving to Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht in the Netherlands three years ago, the Toscana breeding programme has undergone a real revival. After all, the quality of the varieties typical of Toscana has to remain at the highest level. These pelargonium varieties have to be vigorous, easy to grow, and bear large, brightly coloured flowers. Consumers should be able to enjoy these flowering plants all summer long without much maintenance. Only this will make the Toscana live up to its name. And this is precisely what we are working on.

We have now introduced five new varieties and we assess thousands of new selections in our trials every year. This is how we will be able to continue providing you with the best new genetics in years to come.

Primula series: PrimeTime

Since 2014, the breeding programme in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht has been expanded to include the primula programme previously carried out in Markgröningen (Germany). The PrimeTime series is one of the leading results developed in that programme.

In-house, we are now committed to improving and enlarging this series: a challenge our cultivation specialists and breeders are happy to take on. The direct feedback we get from our growers is helping us reach this goal and ensures that we can provide our customers every season with the level of quality typical of these early-flowering and colourful varieties.

Investment

Breeding involves investing in personnel, facilities and knowledge. Florensis has always done this and will continue to do this so that we can keep on supplying a unique and exceptional range of products, which meet the highest standards for quality - now and in the future.
